Dr. Sara L. Terheggen (“Dr. T”) is the founder of The NBD Group, Inc. and is a leading business advisor specializing in private equity fund formation and securities transactions. To date, she has advised on transactions with an aggregate value of approximately $100 billion. Her expertise in securities transactions includes advising companies and investment banks in connection with public and private offerings of equity and debt, and initial public offerings, as well as acquisitions, strategic investments and joint ventures. Her private equity fund formation expertise focuses primarily on representing sponsors in the structuring, formation and offering of private equity funds. Dr. T’s experience spans several industry segments, including technology, healthcare, life sciences, consumer products, financial, media and retail. In addition, she serves as an outside general counsel and chief operating officer for certain of her clients.
Dr. T received her B.S. from the University of Oregon; her Master’s and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University (where she received the Young Researcher Award, an honor presented to the best dissertation in the field); and her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. She also holds a Law & Technology Certificate from Berkeley.
Several organizations have recognized Dr. T for her leadership in her profession and community. For example, she was recently named one of California’s “Most Powerful & Influential Women” by the National Diversity Council. Dr. T was recommended for both Capital Markets and Fund Formation by Legal 500.
She also has previously been named a “Woman of Influence” and “Top 40 under 40” by the Silicon Valley Business Journal; “Top 40 under 40” by The San Francisco Business Times; a “Woman Leader in Tech Law”, “Lawyer on the Fast Track” and a “Women Leader in Law” by The Recorder; “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers for the last four years in a row; “Outstanding Young Alumni” by the University of Oregon; and she was recognized for Pro Bono Achievement by Public Counsel, the largest pro bono law office in the nation, for helping them establish their first ever Small Business Clinic which was focused primarily on helping women and minority entrepreneurs.
For the last two years, she has been one of only 15 attorneys selected nationally as a next generation lawyer in private equity funds by Legal 500. Dr. T has also been invited to the White House on two occasions, to participate in leadership discussion.
Dr. T sits on several boards, including serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Rising International, a non-profit focused on helping women out of extreme poverty. She is a frequent speaker and writer on topics such as innovation, fund formation, IPOs, Artifical Intelligence and leadership.
She serves as a California Delegate to the Vision 2020 Project, a national campaign to advance American women’s economic and social equality. In connection with this initiative, Dr. T has developed a “Think Tank” series that focuses on advancement of women. The series is co-sponsored by the Stanford Rock Center, the Association for Corporate Growth (Silicon Valley) and the Berkeley Center for Law & Business.
Dr. T also has over 10 years of experience working with science and technology centers on the development, management and assessment of initiatives in STEM.
